Mastering the Axe Bounce: Secret Mechanics and Speedrun Tips in Choppy Orc

Published · 1 min read

In Choppy Orc, beating the game is only the beginning. The game has an active, competitive speedrunning community where players complete all 15 stages in under two minutes. The secret to world-record times lies in understanding the hidden physics quirks of the magical axe.

1. The Mid-Air Axe Recall (The Yo-Yo Jump)

Most beginners wait until their orc is standing safely on solid ground before recalling the axe. Speedrunners never touch the ground. When you jump from an embedded axe, your orc retains vertical lift for several frames. If you recall the axe immediately upon takeoff, you can throw it again while still rising in the air.

This allows you to scale sheer vertical walls: throw, bounce, recall, throw higher, bounce, repeat. Mastering the 'yo-yo jump' lets you bypass entire puzzle loops intended by the level design.

2. Hitbox Manipulation and Spike Grazing

Your orc's feet hitbox is slightly recessed compared to his body sprite. When landing on the embedded axe handle, you have a generous 6-pixel horizontal margin of error. Even if the axe handle is positioned adjacent to lethal spikes, landing on the axe completely overrides spike collision. Trust your trajectory and aim for the wood.

3. Pre-Planting on Level Transitions

Because Choppy Orc uses single-screen chambers, you can buffer directional inputs during the fade-out of the previous stage. By holding forward and throw as the screen transitions, your axe launches on frame 1 of the new level, cutting hundreds of milliseconds off every room.

4. The Enemy Rebound Shortcut

Skulls and bats aren't just obstacles—they can be used as trampolines. If you time a jump to land squarely on top of an enemy's head just before your returning axe slices them, you gain a massive vertical bounce without expending your axe placement.
